The Senior Independent Director Role

The role of Senior Independent Director is a key appointment for Jarrold and is critical to the future growth plans. An outline of responsibilities will include: 

  • Along with David Hill, Executive Chair, lead the Board and set the agenda on strategy and performance.
  • Bring impartiality, objectivity and constructive challenge to decision-making
  • Alongside the Senior Leadership Team and Board, agree the strategy and future direction for Jarrold.
  • Support the Senior Leadership Team to run the company, evolving the business and driving performance whilst maintaining the people focused culture.
  • Play a key role in the Board’s development and succession planning, evolving a process to support family succession.
  • Develop strong and trusted relationships with the family shareholders and people across the organisation.  
  • Promote a culture of openness and debate, ensuring the Board is an effective working group.
  • Demonstrate the highest standards of integrity.
  • Ensure risks and associated opportunities are reviewed, managed and understood.
  • Ensure that all relevant legislation, regulations and policies are met and understood.
  • Oversight of any risk to reputation and/or financial standing of the organisation.

Candidate Profile

Jarrold are seeking a Senior Independent Director that will lead and complement the existing Board by bringing different experiences and complimentary values that are aligned to the organisation:

  • Experienced NED or Chair who has held a significant leadership role within a growing organisation
  • Depth of Retail experience
  • Experience of working with family owned organisations is beneficial
  • A reputation for being an effective and collaborative leader with an inclusive coaching style
  • A commercial, entrepreneurial outlook with a growth mind-set keen to contribute to Jarrold’s profitable and sustainable growth for future generations
  • Strong values with an interest in positively contributing to local communities and good causes
  • A connection to the region is helpful, although not essential.

Reward

An annual fee of £40,000, with the anticipated time commitments being to:

  • Attend six Board meetings per year and a two-day strategy session
  • Be available for on-going support and discussions to the Executive Board
